How to find server name of SQL Server Management Studio -


i installed microsoft sql server 2008.

when start sql server management studio (ssms), connect server login window blank textbox server name. have tried lot of names, couldn't solve it.

how can find / server name?

open sql server configuration manager (search in start menu). click on sql server services. instance name of sql server in parenthesis inline sql server service. if says mssqlserver, it's default instance. connect in management studio, type . (dot) or (local) , click connect. if instance name different, use .\[instance name] connect (for example if instance name sql2008, connect .\sql2008).

also make sure sql server , sql server browser services running, otherwise won't able connect.

here's screenshot of how looks on machine. in case, have 2 instances installed: sqlexpress , sql2008.
