Layout & Navigation using Horizontal Tabs (tabbed window) vs Vertical Tabs (sections) -

for our new project, looking latest "standard" layout. business webapp includes lot of master-detail screens/forms.

in our previous projects, have extensively used horizontal tabs jquery ui tabs.

i remember old version (5) of dynamics crm utilised similar approach in there latest 2011 version, have replaced layout include vertical tabs this.

i noticed salesforce has related information on vertical "tab" multiple sections on long long page. not find discussion sort of decision? note ms/sf has separate layouts mobile & surely not expecting businesses use tablets.

is moving towards vertical layout when screens becoming wider? there reason shift?

edit: talking about, question why?

  1. tab performance - crm 4.0 vs crm 2011
  2. no more tabbing – dynamics crm 2011

actually microsoft changing again crm 2011 interface, starts polaris release introduced new forms, take @ article , included slides:

this release brings cross-browser compatibility including safari on ipad, can see microsoft (and salesforce , other companies too) adapt products trying provide best ui customers.
