version control - Replace remote Git repo with local -

i have remote on github old version of site that's no longer in use. i've since made significant changes local copy , want merge these changes in. there way can , keep history that's in remote repo.

is matter of copying old .git directory new project , doing git push --force replace remote version local changes? keep same remote repo (and history) if @ possible.

i think question has been answered there.

also, moving files 1 repo keep history of destination repo (but not of old one) if need keep history of 1 of them, can way.
